| Trump says the US will raise tariffs on Colombia as the drug trade spat intensifies |
It looks like tensions between the U.S. and Colombia are heating up again — and this time, it’s all about the drug trade.
Former President Donald Trump made headlines this weekend after saying he would push for higher tariffs on Colombian goods if the country doesn’t take stronger action against drug trafficking. Speaking at a campaign-style rally in Florida, Trump accused Colombia of not doing enough to stop the flow of narcotics into the U.S.
"Drugs are flooding our society, and they're not stopping it," he stated. "If this persists, we will impose tariffs on them."
Diplomats and trade experts are concerned by the comments, particularly because Colombia is one of the United States' largest trading partners in Latin America. Imposition of tariffs could affect goods such as textiles, coffee, and flowers, demonstrating that the issue is not only political but also economic.
Although Colombian officials have not yet responded formally, many view Trump's remarks as a threat, particularly in light of the upcoming U.S. elections and ongoing discussions over foreign policy.
Critics argue that using trade threats might damage long-standing cooperation between the two countries on anti-drug efforts, while Trump supporters say tough talk is exactly what's needed to get results.
Whether or not these tariffs actually happen remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: the U.S.-Colombia relationship is being tested again, and the next move could shape more than just politics.
